Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” We believe children and youth are a vital part of our church family — not just the future of the church, but for the church in the moment. The faith formation for our children is a focus of our Christian Education Committee and our programs are designed to help young people feel known, loved, and engaged in their faith in age-appropriate ways.
Children begin worship with their families in the sanctuary and stay for a brief time of the service. They participate in the announcements, passing of the peace, the first hymn, and a special Children’s Sermon, designed just for them. After that, they’re invited to head upstairs with our Sunday School teaching staff for age appropriate lessons, activities and crafts, as their families are in worship.
Sunday School
While in Sunday School our children explore the Bible and learn through a variety of activities the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. This is accomplished by reading scripture and short stories. Each lesson includes sharing of information and supported with a number of different activities and crafts. Some of the crafts are incorporated into our worship, for example making stars for Epiphany or creating rocks of affirmation on Mother’s Day.
Music
Music is so important and is a powerful instrument for children to learn the stories of their faith. FCCP provides an opportunity for students to learn a number of songs and then share them in worship. Recently our Grace Notes Choir sang Jesus Loves Me in worship and taught sign language (which they learned in Sunday School) to our congregation. Grace Notes rehearsals are held directly after the service in the Chapel, while parents and families are at Coffee Hour. Grace Notes provides the children a joyful way for them to share their gifts and be part of the life of the church.
Confirmation
Our Confirmation Program is open to all high schoolers, typically starting in 9th grade. Using a United Church of Christ curriculum, confirmands meet regularly to explore their faith, ask questions, and reflect on what it means to follow Jesus, as they transition from adolescence to adulthood. Each youth is paired with a mentor from the congregation, participates in service projects, and takes part in different aspects of worship. The program culminates in the writing of personal statements of belief and the opportunity to join the church as full members. The culmination is a special Confirmation Service, where the students share their statements of faith with the congregation.
